The AF-S DX 18-50mm f3.5-5.6G ED Nikkor lens that comes with the D50 is not such a good lens.
A better option is the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 EX DC with Nikon mount. The Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX DC SHM with Nikon mount is also a 50mm equivalent exceptional lens.
